Gutter repair in Boise, ID with a sagging gutter section being refastened to the fascia

Gutter repair in Boise, ID typically costs $150 to $650 depending on what failed, and most calls get scheduled within the same week. Resealing a leaking corner, rehanging a sagging 20-foot run, repitching a section that holds standing water, or swapping a length crushed by a fallen cottonwood limb are all repairs — not reasons to replace an entire system.

Boise gutters fail in a small number of predictable ways, and almost all of them trace back to freeze-thaw cycling. Water in a trough expands as it freezes, works fasteners loose, and stresses every sealed joint. Do that forty times between November and March, year after year, and even a well-built system develops the specific problems below. The good news is that each one has a defined fix with a defined price.

Gutter problems we repair in the Treasure Valley

These gutter problems account for nearly every repair call we take in the valley. Find your symptom and you will know roughly what the work involves before anyone quotes it.

Signs of a failing gutter system — separated seams, sagging runs and water staining below the gutter line
Most gutter failures announce themselves from the ground: staining down the fascia, a visible sag between hangers, or a drip that only shows up during a hard rain.

Leaking gutters

Leaks concentrate at three places — corner miters, end caps, and downspout outlets. The repair is mechanical, not cosmetic: old sealant gets stripped, the aluminum is cleaned to bare metal, loose rivets are replaced, and the joint is resealed with a gutter-grade tripolymer that stays flexible through Boise winters. Silicone smeared over failed silicone does not bond and fails again inside a season.

Sagging gutters

A sag in the middle of a run means the fasteners let go. On older Boise homes the cause is nearly always spike-and-ferrule hangers, where a nail through the gutter face works loose a fraction of an inch with every freeze-thaw cycle until the run drops. Repair means rehanging on hidden hangers screwed into rafter tails at 24-inch spacing and resetting pitch across the whole run, not just lifting the low spot.

Separated gutters and seams

Separation shows up where two sectional pieces join, or where a seamless run meets a corner. Once a joint opens, water runs behind the gutter and down the fascia — which is how a $200 repair becomes a fascia replacement. Repair means pulling the joint apart, replacing rivets, and resealing. On sectional systems failing at several joints at once, converting the run to seamless is usually the better spend.

Loose or missing hangers

Hangers fail from three causes here: snow load, ice weight in a clogged trough, and rotted fascia that no longer holds a screw. The repair depends on which. Sound fascia gets new hidden hangers at tighter spacing. Soft fascia has to be repaired first, because a screw into rotted wood pulls out under the first heavy load.

Clogged downspouts

Downspout blockages usually sit at the first elbow, where a 2x3 downspout turns toward the wall and debris bridges across the narrowing. Flushing clears most of them. When it does not, we open the elbow rather than leave the blockage. Chronic clogging on a needle-heavy lot is a sizing issue — upsizing to 3x4 usually ends it permanently. See downspouts and drainage.

Holes, rust, and pinholes

Small holes in aluminum can be patched with a matching aluminum patch and sealant, which holds well. Rust perforation in galvanized steel is different — where one pinhole appears, the zinc coating has failed across a broad area and more are coming. Patching steel buys a season or two. Once rust is visible along a run, plan for replacement.

Poor pitch and standing water

Gutters need roughly a quarter inch of fall per 10 feet toward the outlet. Too flat and water stands, which breeds mosquitoes in July and freezes into a solid block in January that can weigh enough to tear the run off. Repitching means unfastening the run, snapping a new chalk line to the correct fall, and rehanging. It is straightforward work that a lot of installers skip on the original job.

Overflowing gutters

Overflow has four possible causes and they need different fixes: debris blockage (cleaning), lost pitch (repitch), a blocked outlet (flush or open), or genuine undersizing (upsize to 6-inch). Diagnosing before quoting matters, because three of those are a few hundred dollars and one is a partial replacement.

Damaged fascia and soffit

Fascia damage is the downstream consequence of every other item on this list. Water that runs behind a gutter soaks the board it hangs on, and in the valley that damage concentrates on north-facing eaves that never dry out in winter. Repair runs $8 to $20 per linear foot depending on whether it is a patch or a full board, and it has to happen before new hangers go in.

Storm and wind damage

Treasure Valley spring wind events pull downspouts off walls and lift gutter ends free of their hangers. Falling limbs — cottonwood in particular, which drops heavy deadwood without warning — dent or crush sections outright. Repair is triage: rehang what is straight, replace what is deformed, and document everything with photos if an insurance claim is involved.

What gutter repairs cost in Boise

Gutter repair costs in Boise scale with access and complexity more than with materials. A first-story reseal is quick; the same repair on a third-story dormer above a sloped landscape bed takes three times the setup.

Repair Typical Boise cost Time on site
Reseal a leaking seam or end cap $150 – $300 1–2 hours
Rehang a sagging run $200 – $450 2–3 hours
Repitch a run for proper fall $250 – $500 2–4 hours
Replace a damaged 10 ft section $250 – $600 2–4 hours
Clear or reopen a blocked downspout $95 – $175 Under 1 hour

Repair or replace? The honest test

Deciding between repair and replacement comes down to three questions, not to how old the gutters look.

First, is the metal itself sound? Aluminum without holes or permanent deformation is repairable almost indefinitely. Steel with rust perforation is not. Second, is the failure isolated or systemic? One bad corner is a repair; four leaking joints on a sectional system is a preview of the next four. Third, what is the ratio? Add up outstanding repairs, and if they exceed roughly 40% of full replacement cost, the repair money is better spent on the replacement.

One more factor: if the existing system is undersized — 5-inch gutter under a steep two-story roof, or a single downspout on a 50-foot run — no repair fixes that. You would be restoring a system to a condition that still overflows. That is the one case where replacement is worth it even when the metal is fine.

Emergency and winter gutter repair in Boise

Winter repair calls in Boise cluster around ice. A trough that entered December full of leaves holds meltwater, that water freezes solid, and the weight — ice runs roughly eight pounds per gallon — pulls hangers out of the fascia or peels the run away from the house. When that happens, water starts running behind the gutter and can get under the shingle course at the eave.

Emergency repair in that situation means stabilizing first and finishing later: securing the loose run so it does not tear further, clearing the ice path so meltwater has somewhere to go, and returning for the permanent rehang once the roof is safe to work on. The prevention is unglamorous — clear the gutters in late November, before the first hard freeze, and the ice never gets a foothold.

Gutter repair across the Boise metro

Repair calls come in from across the valley, and the failure pattern shifts by area. Older homes in the North End, East End, and downtown Nampa mostly need hanger conversions and fascia work. Newer subdivisions in Meridian, Star, and Kuna more often need repitching and outlet upsizing, because builder-grade systems were installed fast and undersized. Eagle foothill properties see the most storm and snow-slide damage.

Gutter repair questions

How much does gutter repair cost in Boise?

Most Boise gutter repairs land between $150 and $650. Resealing a leaking seam or end cap typically runs $150 to $300. Rehanging a sagging section is $200 to $450. Replacing a damaged 10-foot section costs $250 to $600. Repitching a full run runs $250 to $500. Clearing a badly blocked downspout starts around $95 to $175. See the gutter repair cost page for the full table.

Why do my gutters leak at the corners?

Corners leak because they are the only hand-fabricated joint in a seamless system. A miter is two pieces of gutter cut at an angle, riveted, and sealed. Boise's freeze-thaw cycling flexes that joint hundreds of times a winter and eventually breaks the sealant bond. The fix is stripping the old sealant, cleaning the metal to bare, and resealing with a gutter-grade tripolymer — not smearing new silicone over the old failure.

Can a sagging gutter be fixed, or does it need replacing?

A sagging gutter can almost always be fixed if the metal itself is sound. Sagging is a fastening problem, not a gutter problem — usually spike-and-ferrule hangers backing out of the fascia, or hidden hangers spaced too far apart. The repair is rehanging the run on hidden hangers at 24-inch spacing and resetting the pitch. Replacement is only needed if the trough has deformed permanently or the fascia behind it has rotted.

Do you repair storm and wind damage?

Yes. Spring wind events in the Treasure Valley regularly tear downspouts off walls and peel gutter ends loose, and falling limbs dent or crush sections outright. Storm repair usually means rehanging what is salvageable and swapping the damaged section. If you are filing an insurance claim, we can document the damage with photos and provide an itemized written estimate.

My gutters overflow even though they are clean. Why?

Clean gutters that still overflow point to one of three things. First, pitch — the run has lost its fall and water pools instead of reaching the outlet. Second, capacity — a 5-inch gutter under a steep roof or a valley receives more water than it can carry. Third, outlet blockage below the visible trough, in the downspout itself. Repair fixes the first and third; the second needs upsizing to 6-inch.

How fast can you come out for a gutter repair?

Most repair calls in Boise get scheduled within the same week. Active leaks over a doorway or into a crawlspace get moved up. Winter emergencies — a gutter pulled loose by an ice dam, or water backing up under shingles — are handled as they come in, though ice on the roof sometimes forces us to wait for a safe working surface.

Is it worth repairing 25-year-old gutters?

It depends on the material and the failure. Twenty-five-year-old seamless aluminum with sound metal and a single failed section is worth repairing — aluminum runs 20 to 30 years and yours may have a decade left. Twenty-five-year-old galvanized steel showing rust is not, because perforation spreads. A useful test: if outstanding repairs exceed roughly 40% of replacement cost, replace instead.
